A Turkish Dream (portrait photography assignment)

Caner(summer school portrait)

Having arrived from Turkey 6 years ago with the promise of new opportunities, new people and ultimately a new start, selling everything from milk to cigarettes, Caner (pronounced Ganer) runs a small off license in the heart of Camden High Street. The bright aisle of various drinks in the background contrasts against him, dressed in white, while he and his welcoming stance are also bright with his smile and hopes for the future.

Currently living with his cousin, family was the main reason Caner chose to live in Camden instead of other rich Turkish communities across London. Reminiscing about Turkey, Caner told us how he misses his home town and how he doesn’t like British weather; an opinion which many newcomers from South-East Europe share.

Despite all his struggles and hardships, Caner remains optimistic. He told us of his dream of eventually returning back to his home country and opening a variety of shops there with his new-found skills.
