We all know that digital technology can connect us with our family and our home when away. For Susanna this is no different. In this photo she is speaking to her Saami cousin, Timimie, in Stockholm, thousands of miles from London. As Saami is on the UNESCO list of endangered languages, we thought it crucial to represent the relationship of the Saami and their descendants to their roots. We also sought to show the interconnectedness of a minority in different cities, seeing on one hand the global aspect of this exchange and on the other the sense of community that can be held through common experience no matter the distance. We chose to use an over-the-shoulder shot to focus on both the relationship of the subjects and to follow the movement London-Stockholm that permits this conversation. Timimie is framed through Susanna’s arms and profile. We decided to take the photo this way both to create a sense of intimacy and togetherness and to reflectively acknowledge our own presence as ‘outsiders’ in this exchange.
