Saami Logbook – Day 4

On day four part of our group woke up bright and early to go on a trip to the Swedish Church in London in case anyone there was Saami. We spoke to the priest and several members of the community but no one wanted to be on camera for fear of misrepresenting Saami culture.

We then all met up in the Anthropology Common Room at 11.30. As we had been unable to find anyone Saami in London or didn’t receive permission to photograph the people we found, we asked one of our team members, Susanna, who has Saami family, to Skype her cousin Timimie.  She then conducted a Skype interview with her that we both photographed and filmed.

After lunch we had a language session with our teacher Riitta-Liisa Valijärvi. We learnt basic greetings and descriptive questions as well as words for family members.

Finally, we split up into three groups. The first went to research places we could find Saami objects; the second looked for culinary elements in London of Saami cuisine; and the third conducted an interview to a Swedish student with Saami family connections.
