Bulgarian Logbook, Day 3 – Food!

The theme of today’s lecture is ‘THE CITY, MONUMENTS AND MEMORY’, which is taught by Dr Uilleam Blacker. Beginning with the question ‘Why do we build a monument?’, he introduced us to the concept of collective memory. People can get memories from society, save or unfold collective memory in space, and rely on a trigger point to relive memory. Then, he showed us the picture of some sculptures near the Euston station to confirm the idea. The monument saves us from forgetting, and it provides a historical environment for the memory of the future generations. History needs inheritance, especially intergenerational inheritance. Lest we forget! After that, we continued to edit the documentary of our group with the rest of the morning. Our film has begun to take shape, and we will try to perfect it with the skills we have learned before.

In the afternoon, Dani is still teaching Bulgarian language classes. The theme of this time is gender. Almost everyone in our group comes from different countries and speaks different languages. She asked if our different nouns were negative, positive or neutral in their native language, and the results proved that the same noun might have different genders in different languages. With this in mind, she expressed that the gender of grammar is culturally relevant. After the course, she took us to a Bulgarian restaurant called Sunny beach Bulgarian restaurant. Once again, we tasted Bulgarian cuisine, including pots, beer, barbecue and more. Our understanding of Bulgaria is even deeper.
