Turkish Logbook Day 6: Arabam eski

The opening lecture was called “Cultural Memory in Europe” and focused on culture through the psychological lens. Here, the lecturer focused on the different forms in which culture can permeate the human psyche and create cultural memory. For instance, culture can be transferred to people through collective memory; communication i.e. verbal interaction; photos, objects, genealogies, literature cultural representations e.g. the kilt and music to name a few forms.

The lecturer particularly stressed the idea of building a coherent European memory, which the EU has exercised through focusing on significant turning points such as enlightenment, the inception of capitalism; imperialism; the world wars; the Cold War and post Cold War. However, he also raised the question as to whether it is possible to share a collective memory. For instance, the Holocaust is perceived alternatively by different countries because of how it uniquely effected each one of them.

After lunch we had a Turkish lesson, in which we learnt the Turkish possessive suffixes. By the end of the lesson we were able to describe a noun that was in our possession, for instance how to say “My car is old” – “Arabam eski.”

In our project session, we focused on editing the vast film footage we have, in order to create our documentary.
