Welsh Logbook-Day 2

Our day started at 10am with a lecture about a skills session of documenting filming. The lecturer named Chris Groenveld who is a director and cinematographer of non-fiction cinema. Her work helps make visible the various social effects of global financial capitalism, gentrification and climate change, in the form of intimate portraits of people and places. Chris introduced the basic techniques in filming and showed us some excellent examples from the past. We have learned a lot about the choice of shooting angle, how to organize the structure of the documentary and the proportion of the screen layout. We believe that these skills will be very helpful and smoother in our shooting process!

In the afternoon, we were assigned to do a collage about the Roman culture. We were given some literary works from which we could get inspiration for our collage, and our group chose the theme from a Polish poem ‘Untitled verse’ which we all liked. The poem mainly depicted the images of nature and the Gypsies, so our theme was about the association between nature and human beings. After the theme was determined, we browsed the materials provided, like magazines and newspaper, to pick up the images that matched the theme and we tore them off for later use. We put the picture of a woman and a little girl in the centre of the collage to represent the human civilization and a green frame was around the head of the woman to make her something like an icon. Some images of nature, like lions, forests, mountains, flowers and skies were put around people. At the end of today’s session, we successfully completed the task and had a great fun.
