Turkish Logbook Day 1: “Salem!” Hello!

Challenging Europe commenced with a passionate lecture by one of the strand co-coordinators, Eszter. She informed us of the foundations of Europe as a concept and interestingly suggested that Europe is a matter of individual perception i.e. Europe can manifest through feeling, ways of thinking and social interaction.

We then proceeded to the grand opening lecture where we received an insight from other strand coordinators into the other strands of the Global Citizenship programme. Here we learnt about the activities that other strands, such as Environmental and Health policy would engage in. We (the audience) were also asked what we perceived to be a global citizen. A question that raised more questions than answered!

Our next activity was a Turkish lesson with our enthusiastic teacher, Cavidan. By the end of the lesson Cavidan had taught us to a have a very simple conversation; as we learnt how to say “Hello” (Salem/Merhaba), “How are you?” (Nasılsınız) and “I am fine thank you” (iyiyim teşekkür ederim).

Our final session of the day was a project tutorial with our navigator, George. George’s experience in and knowledge of the programme was useful in providing us with tips on how to create an impressionable documentary and how to organise roles within the group. We used this advice to create a film and collage team within the group, whilst we agreed that all of us will contribute to blog and log posts.
